What to Expect When Working with an Editor

If you haven’t worked with an editor before, or have questions about the process, here’s what to expect:

Once you contact the editor, I will be in touch* to discuss your project in more detail to ensure she is the right fit and to determine the scope of editing needed.

*Video calls recommended, audio-only calls also available

What’s Included:

Copyedits - Tracked changes to include grammar, spelling, and syntax, as well as issues regarding overall clarity and consistency. This service can range from a light copyedit, only identifying fatal errors, to a line edit, which is a more thorough edit of the manuscript line-by-line. Authors may choose to include a second round of edits to ensure revisions have not introduced new errors into the manuscript. Along with the edited manuscript, authors receive an editorial letter outlining consistency elements, as well as a 1-hour call to discuss the editorial letter.

Developmental Edits - A deeper examination of character, setting, dialogue, and plot to ensure consistency and clarity of story. Depending on desired level of editing, each scene may be assessed for structure and effectiveness against the story’s plot. The Developmental Edit includes an editorial letter outlining where the story’s strengths lie, and where certain elements can be strengthened to serve the overall story, which acts as a personalized writing guide. Additionally, a Developmental Edit includes a 1-hour video call to go over the editorial letter and answer any questions.

Note: The Developmental Edit does not include copyediting because it is a more macro view of story structure and necessary elements

Evaluation - A written assessment of the effectiveness of story and/or scene introductions and endings, as well as comments on the effectiveness of character, setting, dialogue, plot, and other literary devices. Includes a 30-minute call to go over feedback.

Beta Reading - A letter outlining the overall impression of the story, how well it fits into the genre, and whether any specific elements stand out (good or otherwise). This is a high-level review from a reader’s perspective. Author can provide specific questions, if desired. This includes a 30-minute video call.

Coaching and Consulting - Editor is available for video and other communication regarding a specific topic (for example, a plot snag the author is struggling to resolve, a brainstorming session, or even regular check-ins/accountability as publishing deadlines approach). Consultation can be a one-off session as needed. For coaching, structured video sessions will cover the desired topic, and the editor will check in regularly for motivation, provide accountability, and be available for email questions and discussions on the coaching topic.
